What motivates you to wake up and go to work?
My dog’s breath in my face is pretty great motivation to get out of bed and let him outside. Beyond that, I feel motivated to go to work in the morning because every day I face new challenges that I get to tackle with a fantastic team of developers! At the end of each day, I get a feeling of accomplishment knowing the work I do serves schools and students in need.
What do you like most about your job?
Without a doubt, it is the people I get to work with every day. FES has an amazing culture. Every time I walk into the building (or upstairs to my home office), I know that I will have great interactions throughout the day. As someone who has suffered burnout in previous workplaces, it is so refreshing to once again be excited about the work I do and the people I do it with.
What’s something most people don’t know about you?
My real name is Jacob. My parents thought Jack sounded better a few hours after they signed my birth certificate but never got around to changing it legally.
What is your motto or personal mantra?
Journey before destination. I “borrowed” it from one of my favorite authors, Brandon Sanderson. I have a tendency to be so goal oriented that I focus on the future and forget to enjoy the present. This motto reminds me to take a breath, look around, and appreciate all the amazing people in my life and the relationships I have built with them.
What is one random fact about you?
I am terrified of needles! Unfortunately my wife is a nurse and has just about zero sympathy for my phobia. When she was in nursing school, and needed to practice starting IV’s, I had to serve as a pin cushion. It was going pretty well until I passed out on her third attempt. One of us thought it was hilarious…
What hobbies do you enjoy?
My biggest hobbies are running, weightlifting and barbecuing. I try to make it to the gym five days a week but I am becoming more and more certain that I only exercise so I can keep on eating barbecue all the time. Beyond that I am a mediocre bowler and a terrible golfer, but I have a great time doing both!
